安土・桃山様式の壮麗な面影を残す島原城
築城は寛永元年(1624年)。有明海に臨み、雲仙岳の麓に位置します。明治以降は廃城処分となり、現在は本丸に天守・櫓・長塀が復興され、城跡公園となっています。石垣と堀は江戸時代からのままです。築城以来250年にわたる島原藩の歴史遺産やキリシタン史料などが展示されています。島原城の西側には武士の住まいがあった屋敷町に現存する武家屋敷も見ることができます。
Transcending the Gracious style from Azuchi-Momoyama era
The castle, situated in the foot of Unzen Mountain besides the Ariake Sea, was created in 1624, the first year of Kanei period. Although once deserted after the Meiji era, the Honmaru (castle keep), Tenshu (keep tower), yagura (tower), and Nagahori were restored whilst stonewalls and fosses remains untouched from Edo era . Today the site acquaints visitors as a Jyo-Seki (castle ruin) Park where people could discover 250 year history of Shimabara, of its governance and historical researches of secret Christians. The Samurai residences “Bukeyashiki” is located on the west side of Shimabara Castle, in Yashiki-machi.
